Ewing Brothers achieve long term savings with MiX Telematics
Dungannon, Northern Ireland-based international freight specialist, Ewing Brothers Limited, is reporting savings of £300 per vehicle per month following the installation of MiX Telematics' Fleet Manager solution three years ago. This equates to an annual saving of 816 gallons of fuel for each truck in its 25-strong fleet and an overall fuel bill reduction of five percent, significantly beating the company's initial 4.3 percent target.
"We are really pleased with the performance of the MiX Telematics solution," says Steven Ewing, Managing Director at Ewing Brothers. "It's an invaluable tool that helps us to run our business with professionalism and has provided us with great financial savings. We really value the customer support that has been provided by the MiX Telematics fleet consultancy team. It has made a real difference to the results we have achieved."
In addition to monitoring fuel usage, Ewing Brothers has invested in the optional RIBAS (see Editor's note) in-cab driving aid in order to provide drivers with real-time feedback on their driving style by way of audible alerts and warnings.
The company also uses Fleet Manager to improve the visibility of its fleet: "We use the live tracking function 95 percent of the time we are in the office," says Steven Ewing. "It's a great time-saving tool that allows us to monitor the location of our vehicles and communicate arrival times to our clients. Even when we are not in the office we can view the system via the mobile phone application, giving us complete control."
Ewing Brothers Limited specialises in the haulage of temperature-controlled and dry goods carried on flats, curtainsiders and Euroliners. The haulage service covers Ireland, the UK and Europe, with a same- or next-day delivery service offered for Ireland and overnight delivery throughout the UK.
Delivery schedules for Europe depend on the destination, with loads frequently being taken to France, Hungary and Spain. Many major routes are used for shipping and all freight is driver-accompanied to ensure it arrives safely and as quickly as possible.
RIBAS is a dashboard-mounted display which gives the driver instant feedback on a range of driving-style parameters, namely:
R = over Revving
I = excessive Idling
B = harsh Braking
A = harsh Acceleration
S = over Speeding
Each of these parameters is represented on the display by an illuminated icon which is normally coloured green. Whenever a parameter comes close to being exceeded, its icon changes to amber, alerting the driver to a potential problem and thereby allowing corrective action to be taken. The amber light is intended purely as a warning sign; no record of an infringement is made against the driver by Fleet Manager at this time. However, should the amber warning be ignored and the parameter exceeded, the infringement is recorded by Fleet Manager and the red light illuminates.
