Business Challenge

Whether it’s a plot about noble families fighting for control of mythical lands acting out scenes of political and sexual intrigue, or a young prince that must become a monster in order to obtain the power needed to protect his kingdom, Northern Ireland is becoming one of the most sought-after filming locations for American fantasy productions like Game of Thrones and Dracula Untold.

Increased activity has helped spark fresh investment and has also provided Balloo Hire with a strong customer base for the rental of filming equipment. As a trusted supplier to large productions, a reputation for reliability and efficiency is of the upmost importance.

Balloo Hire operates a mixed fleet of delivery and service vehicles to transport hire equipment and attend scheduled maintenance visits. Ensuring their equipment is in excellent working condition and that it arrives on time is essential.

In order to maintain its reputation as a valued supplier, the company sought a telematics solution that could provide them with an overview of its fleet’s activity in terms of location and also a means of encouraging careful driving.

Often their vehicles are out on the road transporting high-value equipment, so finding a way to keep the number of driving events like harsh braking and harsh acceleration to a minimum was of particular importance to Balloo Hire.

Solution Provided

After reviewing the market, Balloo Hire opted for MiX Fleet Manager and the RIBAS in-cab driving aid.
Since installation, the tracking functionality has become extremely important in the day-to-day running of the business and is used for all elements of planning.
In total the company has six users who log into MiX Fleet Manager every day to co-ordinate and facilitate the drivers’ activities.

In terms of using the RIBAS Display, Balloo Hire adopted a fairly relaxed implementation approach, which works very well. The drivers understand why it is important that the vehicles are driven with care and the RIBAS supports them in doing so. Each week the management team receives automatic reports on driver performance scores, which are used to create driver leaderboards on similar vehicle types.

Results

“The MiX system gives us peace of mind in knowing where our drivers are at any given time. It also allows us to communicate arrival times to customers and be reactive in what we do,” comments Peter Loney, Workshop Manager. “If something changes in our daily planning and we need to accommodate an extra job or pick up an unexpected item, we can look at the system and utilise our resources accordingly,” he says.
The company recently put a new driver into a vehicle not fitted with the MiX system and it made them realise straight away how much they have come to rely on it. “Overall, we have never had any issues with the system and have been very happy with the service delivered by MiX Telematics,” concludes Peter.
