Business Challenge

As an international operator carrying heavy loads on long distance routes, Ewing Bros was aware of the benefits of implementing a telematics solution. Due to the nature of the business, one of the organisation’s key drivers for implementation was to drive down fuel costs.

Solution Provided

The company implemented the MiX Fleet Manager solution with RIBAS over three years ago and have successfully been using the system to improve visibility and monitor fuel usage.

MiX Fleet Manager is MiX Telematics’s flagship fleet management solution, which is powered by a feature-rich software platform that allows customers to manage, monitor and measure the performance of their vehicles and drivers. The RIBAS Display is an in-cab driving aid that provides drivers with real-time feedback on their driving style by way of audible alerts and warnings.

“We use the live tracking function 95% of the time we are in the office. It’s a great time-saving tool that allows us to monitor the location of our vehicles and communicate arrival times to our clients. Even when we are not in the office we can view the system via the mobile phone application, giving us complete control,” says Steven Ewing, Managing Director at Ewing Bros.

Implementation

Upon installation, a MiX Telematics fleet consultant worked closely with Ewing Bros, visiting them on site to set up fuel management and RAG (red, amber, green) scoring reports. These reports provide information regarding the number of driving events that occurred during the previous week, as well as in which vehicle they occurred and which drivers were involved.

“The scores are printed off and put on display in the office so that when drivers come in, they can see how they have performed, and where they are positioned in relation to their peers. If we see that a driver is continually scoring within the red band, we look into which events they are struggling with and work with them to improve their performance,” says Steven.

Using the reports scoring information also enables Ewing Bros to identify their most fuel-efficient vehicles within the fleet and utilise them accordingly.

Results

When the system was first installed, the target for annual savings on the company’s fuel bill was 4.3%. Within just two months of running the system, Ewing Bros achieved their return on investment and are now saving 5% on their annual fuel bill. That’s an average fuel saving of approximately £300 per vehicle per month. In terms of volume, that equates to 816 gallons less fuel used per vehicle every year.
