In a move designed to reduce its carbon footprint, save fuel, improve safety and enhance levels of customer comfort and service, Cardiff Bus has equipped its entire 230-strong fleet with MiX Telematics' Fleet Manager system. Included in the package is MiX Telematics' unique RIBAS unit, (see Editor's Note below), an in-cab driving aid which helps drivers get the best performance from their vehicles at all times.
"The decision to opt for Fleet Manager was taken following a market review by our project team, which concluded the MiX Telematics system gave the best balance in terms of meeting both our current and future requirements," comments Cardiff Bus Service Delivery Director, Gareth Mole. "The system has now been introduced across the fleet in partnership with our Trades Union colleagues, who naturally share our objectives to minimise the company's impact upon the environment while improving safety, efficiency and the overall customer experience.
"In terms of reducing our fuel consumption, our headline goal is to achieve a saving of five percent. To that end, we are incorporating the use of Fleet Manager into the Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving module of our Driver CPC programme to help our drivers further improve their skills. And to ensure the message of driving carefully and responsibly reaches every part of the organisation, all our drivers, supervisors and depot employees will be involved
As the trading name of Cardiff City Transport Limited, Cardiff Bus provides a comprehensive fare stage passenger carrying service in and around Cardiff, Barry and Penarth.

As MiX Telematic's premium on-board computer, Fleet Manager offers vehicle tracking, communications and the ability to interface with satellite navigation systems. Accompanying Fleet Manager is a choice of reporting software; FM Pro for PC-based analysis, or FM-Web forinternet-based access.
The RIBAS display, which operates in conjunction with Fleet Manager and is offered as an optional extra, is a dashboard-mounted array of five LEDs which illuminate whenever the driver exceeds a pre-programmed vehicle parameter. Each LED is positioned alongside its corresponding letter, where:
R = over Revving
I = excessive Idling
B = harsh Braking
A = harsh Acceleration
S = over Speeding
